But when it comes to adroit automobile creations, innovative designers look for an exclusive factor, which would push their contrivance from a multitude of other conceptions. Well, in this case, Indian industrial designer Kiran Gangadhran has certainly demonstrated his unique factor, with the Uniq electric scooter concept for the year 2040.

With the growing craze for eco friendly gadgets, 2011 was the year that saw greater potential in the demand of greener gadgets. This year the predictions are that yet more innovative projects are in the making. There are a few eco friendly gadgets that will be the talk of the town in 2012 for their functions and efficiency.

The Pacific Trash Vortex or better known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the world’s largest marine landfill. Comprising of an expansive patch of the Pacific Ocean, constrained by long range ocean gyres, the polluted space is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of plastics, chemical sludge and other contaminating components. As a matter of fact, some scientists consider it to be a slow moving polluting mass which is likely to expand even further in the future. Now, given the alarming scope and the current adverse impact on the surrounding ecology, it is highly pertinent to contrive a collective solution for this ever growing marine predicament. In relation to this, fortunately there have been a few innovative conceptions that righteously pose as our sustainable savior. So, as ardent ‘eco friendly’ citizens, we should certainly have a look at some of these ambitious proposals.

According to statistics in America women comprise of only 25 percent of the total bicycle riders. One of the reasons for this is the lack of bicycles on the market that focus on this niche, and provide a viable and comfortable product to its clientele. “Velo chic”, is one such concept that aims to bring a trendy, comfortable line of bicycles to the female audience and bridge the gender gap in the bicycle industry.

Environmentally friendly homes can reduce inhabitants’ carbon footprints, save resources and lead the way for others to live the same way. Most of us, however, have been living in homes that are pretty standard, in that they don’t help us reduce our carbon footprints. The US Department of Energy has been trying to further green living in terms of homes and has been organizing the Solar Decathlon for a while now. The international competition is a biennial event that challenges 20 college teams to come up with conceptual homes that utilize solar energy. The teams get to work on site, detailing their prefabricated houses for 10 days in a bid to take home the Solar Decathlon title. 2012’s competition is set to begin and we’re eager to see who wins the coveted prize.

The process in which inspiration from nature and its elements like tree, plants, hills, etc. determines the course of architecture, has been termed as ‘biomimicry’. Learning from nature not only helps in solving design related problems, but allows integration of sustainability for constructing eco sound structures.

Interestingly, very few of us would have really thought about how a futuristic washing machine would look like in 2050. But, Orbit washing machine concept design by Electrolux, rendered by industrial designer Elie Ahovi, is bamboozling and worthy of your attention.

Poor people, who can’t afford proper housing facilities, have to live in adverse weather conditions, bearing temperatures below zero degree at times. Peter Toronyi has come up with a concept named Kalha that will provide comfort when the temperature outside dips. The object designed by Peter deals with three issues simultaneously; sustainability, survival and ecology.

The stunning design of the coffee booth will draw you in, and once inside, you will be enthralled by other remarkable features of this cubicle. This is an eco friendly coffee kiosk that does not stay stationed at one place and its showy and avante garde design will surely lure in customers. The space inside is well planned, airy and bright, thanks to the long carved out windows.

If you are thinking of some good way to get rid of your Apple computer that has become obsolete, there is nothing better than recycling it to create something unique and useful. If you happen to be an Apple fanboy, you just don’t need to throw away your old iMac or PowerBook into the trash can. As a matter of fact, it is among the very few places where one experiences the transient tranquility of physical safety as well as psychological retirement. In relation to this, architects have time and again looked forth to integrate a more collective approach to housing, which in turn would improve upon its spatial flexibility. Following along this trend, designer Søren Korsgaard has contrived his expansive SuperFlex system: a housing component which can be reconfigured for completely different user oriented purposes.

The new headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Amman, the capital of Jordan is a prominent green construction. The highly eco friendly four story structure also accommodates the Regional Center for Environmental Health Activities, sharing its reception, conference rooms, etc. and economizing on space. Designed by Amman-based builders the Engicon, the building has immense of green potential.

Riding a bicycle is pollution free and keeps the environment clean and green. A lot of innovations in terms of bicycle designing have been made in the past and designers just don’t seem to run out of ideas that will give you a more eco friendly ride. Jazzing up with numerous bike designs is a Spanish architect turned designer named Jose Hurtado, who is credited for crafting the Twist Bike. It has an unconventional shape, which pushes people into a state of awe.

What looks like an equipment straight out of a chemistry lab is the Dreamtime Alarm Clock designed by Vera Wiedermann. The alarm clock has a beautiful appearance and will stir you awake from a dreamy state pleasantly. If you get annoyed by the beeping sound of a tradition alarm clock, then the meaningful design by Vera will leave you impressed.

City transportation goes more electric and sustainable with researchers all geared up for developing highly efficient electric cars meant for city commutation. The one from MIT, dubbed the Hiriko is an outstanding concept and exclusively meant for shared transportation. MIT recently uncovered the smart, foldable and stackable City Car concept, which will arrive in European cities by 2013, but will not be available for individual use. They plan to deploy a squad of 20 Hirikos in Spain next year to check their suitability in a sharing transportation system.

Old and unused materials usually end up in the town’s dump, once they’ve outlived their usefulness. This is the case with all consumer products. The problem lies in the fact that such discarding of materials adds significantly to landfills, posing hazards to health and the environment. Recycling has long been proposed as a solution to help reduce the garbage issue. Despite this, most of us do next to nothing to reinvent old products, and would rather discard them and buy new ones. A small section of people, however, strive to make beautiful art from old stuff. Using skateboards, they’ve created functional and trendy items that look good and serve a purpose as well.

Italian firms Med Computer and Biomood have created biodegradable cases for Apple iPhone, the iNature. It was demonstrated at CES 2012 in Las Vegas. The iNature cases will decompose about 90 percent in soil in 180 days after you throw away them. They are made from a native Italian bio-plastic, called the Apinat. The material is ideal to protect your iPhone from falls, scratches and shocks, as it fits well around your handset.

The drive to find sustainable means of transportation has never been so urgent than at present. The sheer number of cars on the road has caused traffic jams in all urban cities around the world to the point that traffic snarls have become the norm. Besides this, air pollution has reached alarming levels, posing health hazard to citizens. Our use of fossil fuel powered vehicles is one of the major contributors to pollution, which is why researchers are constantly trying to develop alternative methods of transportation. It is only now that the idea of sustainable transportation is slowly gaining ground as our technology has given us the tools to create vehicle concepts that are green and clean. People have come up with some clever but bizarre designs for public transport which may just turn into reality in the future.

Oil spills have a devastating impact on marine life. We just have to look at the pictures of the aftereffects of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to understand the horrible reality. The collapse of the Deepwater Horizon oil well released 4.9 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The oil consumed everything in its path, taking over the peaceful ecosystem with its poisons and causing all kinds of environmental problems.

Iconic bridges and skyscrapers throughout the world consume huge amounts of energy and these architectural structures might require retrofitting in order to become energy efficient. Some attempts, which could turn these structures greener, are already underway. One such attempt has already been initiated by the energy giant GE (General Electric), which would involve the makeover of the lighting of the famous Tower Bridge in London. The time is also apt for giving the bridge a new green look as the summer Olympics would soon trod the city.

The gap between mankind and nature is slowly but surely widening. While we have lived off the earth for millennia, it’s safe to say that we have barely given anything back. This is now causing problems as we see ourselves gazing into a future where resources are depleting, land space is scarce and pollution is at an all-time high. Our way of life has distanced us from the natural environment so much so that our understanding and connection to our surroundings is all but broken. Is there anything that can be done to reverse the trend? Maybe, if certain designers and architects have their way.

This concept is truly an energy saving design, which will be helpful for people who usually forget to unplug their gadgets. This design not only saves the environment but also helps you save loads of money, as a gadget which is plugged in when not in use wastes energy. The innovative concept of PumPing Tap has won it the ‘Red Dot Design Concept award’.
