Get Paid for Recycling Electronics – Cell Phones, Computers, etc – Yes, really, paid

Do you have a stack of old electronics lying around?  You know that drawer or corner of the closet that you dread.  The old college laptop?  Your first cell phone?  Your third cell phone?  The cell phone you found in the couch after a year?  They’ll also dispose of digital cameras, PDAs, game consoles, and more.

You’d be happy just to get rid of that stuff, but why donate when you can profit?  Gazelle.com will actually pay you for recycling your old electronics.  If your electronics pile has some really old stuff in it, they’ll let you send those items in for proper and responsible disposal, even those items with no resale value.  If you have at least one item that they value at more than $1, they’ll pay for shipping.  Most of the time, they’ll even send you the box.

How it works

First you go to Gazelle.com.  Then you fill in some info about what you have.  Then you figure out how to ship – keep in mind they’ll usually figure it out for you – and finally you decide what you want to do with the money.  If any of this sounds “too involved” just check out their how to video.  They couldn’t make it easier.  They’ll even provide you with instruction for wiping all your personal info from the devices that you send in, to minimize concerns over personal data.  Finally, five days later you’ll receive a check or a PayPal deposit, whichever you prefer.

Recycling Electronics for Charity

Gazelle will also allow you to donate the proceeds of your recycling quickly, easily, and directly to a number of established charities including the American Red Cross.

According to Gazelle, “American’s throw away more than 350,000 cell phones, over 100 million per year and 130,000 computers daily – making electronic waste the fastest growing part of the U.S. use garbage stream. And when improperly disposed of they can leak lead, cadmium, mercury… you get the idea. And these can all affect the quality of clean water, agriculture and soil used for food supplies.”  Ahh, the other circle of life… Fortunately, more than 80% of products processed by this service find a second life in the home of a grateful new owner.  That puts Gazelle high on our list of green companies that make environmentalism easy, attractive, less of a “why?” and more of a “why not?”
