Eco Factor: Lawn-equipment designed to be charged by solar energy.

While most of us live a life on gadgets that others have invented for us to use, there are some who do their bit for the environment and also show others a green way that should be followed. Boulder County resident Tom Lopez is on the other side as he hasn’t waited for technology to help him go green, but has worked out himself for the same.

With a degree in aerospace engineering, the 70-year-old inventor has developed a range of lawn equipment that is powered by electric batteries, which are recharged by solar energy. The endeavor started when Lopez’s wife was in need of help as her garden equipment started breaking down. Lopez didn’t get it repaired but change the two-stroke motor in a tiller and replaced it with an electric one driven by solar-charged batteries.

The taste of green turned Lopez into an inventor, who then followed the success by converted a few dozen surplus electric mowers from Black and Decker to run on solar energy. After the mowers, came walking tractors that too used the energy of the sun for all plowing and weeding jobs. With no stopping here, Lopez is now looking forward to companies who can mass produce his lawn equipment and help others go green as well.
