Eco Factor: Old car converted to run on a zero-emission engine.
Jim Danielson and Sean Kleinschmidt, students at Purdue University have converted an old Porsche with a blown engine into an electric-powered vehicle. The students bought an old 1987 Porsche 924S for $500 and then sold parts that they didn’t require for about the same amount.
They spend about $6000 on the conversion out of which they’re hoping to get $4000 back through an Illinois program that rebates costs for alternative-power conversions. The car now runs on deep-cycle lead acid marine batteries that power a forklift motor. At present the converted car can reach a top speed of 55mph and has a range of about 50 miles on a single charge.
